Sean Penn Haiti Foundation, J/P HRO,
Selected as 1 World, 1 Book Charity

The Sean Penn Haiti Foundation, J/P HRO, which has received extensive praise for making a real difference in "saving lives and bringing relief to the Haitian people quickly and effectively" -- from awards and appreciation from various branches of the U.S. military to a major contribution from Bill Clinton's foundation --  has been selected as the 1 World 1 Book charity for the featured book.

The 1 World 1 Book mission is to bring all the world's book readers together to read and discuss one exceptional new book every two months to
share in the enjoyment and discovery of great books, to foster new perspectives and positive change individually and therefore globally, and to provide attention and funds to charitable organizations making a much-needed difference in our world in the process. Membership in 1 World 1 Book is free.

Each week, 1 World 1 Book sends out a newsletter focused in two areas:

  1. Articles, interviews, videos and more related to the theme of the featured book selection toward enhancing their reading experience, their lives, and others' lives
  2. Articles, interviews, videos and more related to the selected charity and the work they are doing toward educating members, inspiring their contribution of effort, funds, and/or spreading the word about the charity to their family and friends

Members also discuss and enlighten each other in the 1 World 1 Book forums. All members are strongly encouraged to order the books through the links on the featured book page, as both 100% of all 1 World 1 Book commissions and a portion of the author's proceeds on the sale of the book go to the featured charity ... which for November and December is the Sean Penn Haiti foundation, J/P HRO.

"There are so many charities out there who need attention and of course funds for the crucial work they are doing," notes Brian Vaszily, founder of 1 World 1 Book, "so choosing just one to give attention and funds to is difficult. But with the devastating earthquake in Haiti that killed hundreds of thousands, injured hundreds of thousands more, and has left over a million there homeless -- and now with the outbreak of cholera amongst so many other crucial issues -- to say that Haiti is in desperate need of the world's help is extreme understatement.

"Sean Penn's Haiti foundation, J/P HRO, has received accolades from individuals and organizations that transcend any political or religious boundaries for the real impact they are making with the limited resources they have," Vaszily continues. "J/P HRO deserves and needs far more attention and funding to help our suffering neighbors in Haiti, and so by focusing on and donating to them for our featured book for November and December, my hope is for 1 World 1 Book to help contribute to that."

About J/P HRO

(The following is excerpted from the Sean Penn Haiti Foundation website. Please visit their site for more information and to donate.)

"Our mission at J/P HRO is simple: to save lives and bring relief to the Haitian people quickly and effectively.

Founded by actor and humanitarian Sean Penn, J/P HRO began its work just hours after the earthquake hit. Through his previous relief efforts — including experience helping to rebuild New Orleans after hurricane Katrina — he had amassed a large network of emergency management and government contacts, whom he mobilized to take immediate action in Haiti.

Less than a week after the disaster, J/P HRO was on the ground in Haiti, bringing much needed medical supplies and a team of doctors. Our team immediately went to work, treating patients, delivering medical supplies and equipment, and providing food to numerous camps and orphanages.

In the months since the earthquake, we have built a strong network of doctors and emergency management volunteers who have made tremendous progress on the ground. This team includes many Haitian employees, including translators, security, drivers, doctors, and nurses.

Among our team's many accomplishments, we have recently taken over management of the United Nations International Organisation for Migration (UNIOM) refugee camp of over 50,000 people in Petionville. J/P HRO is now overseeing the relocation of IDPs over the coming weeks to protect them from the rain and mudslides in our current location.

Though we have accomplished a lot in the short time since the earthquake, there is much more to be done."
